Singapore Sick Leave: Payroll Record Checks

Keep leave records aligned with the employee’s eligibility and the current MOM requirements before making payroll adjustments.

Understand the entitlement structure

MOM’s guidance links paid sick-leave entitlement to qualifying conditions and length of service. Full entitlement after at least six months is up to 14 days of outpatient sick leave and 60 days of hospitalisation leave; the 60 includes the outpatient entitlement, rather than being an additional 60 days. Check the rules for shorter service and the employee’s circumstances.

Records to check

  • Employee start date and applicable service length.
  • Leave dates and whether they are outpatient or hospitalisation leave.
  • Required medical certification and notification.
  • Leave already used in the relevant year.
  • Any more favourable contractual entitlement.
  • Approved classification of any unpaid absence before payroll adjustment.

Avoid automatic deductions from an incomplete record

A missing document or unclear leave code should generate a query for HR. Do not assume it means unpaid leave. Resolve the classification, record the decision and ensure the payroll input matches the approved leave record.
